BUILD YOUR OWN?!?!
No, seriously. It’s possible! If you are a skilled craftsman, you can build your very own, custom glass aquarium! I personally don’t have the skills required to do this, but I found a really great video that gives you a step by step guide on how to build your own custom glass aquarium.
I also found a really awesome time lapse video of a 2100 gallon custom aquarium being built.

Why Glass Aquariums?
Glass aquariums are one of the two most popular types of aquariums on the market. It’s sometimes referred to as the “traditional” type of aquarium because they have been on the market for a very long time. Glass aquariums have some distinctive advantages to having as opposed to acrylic aquariums and also have some disadvantages.
Advantages:
- Undistorted View. All you have to do is keep it clean! It’s just like any other glass surface you have in your household. The overall clarity on a glass tank is much better than an acrylic tank. Just please don’t use Windex on the inside of your tank!
- Less Expensive. Glass tanks are typically less expensive than acrylic tanks. That doesn’t mean you have to suffer on quality either. Glass is just an easier material to source and work with for manufacturers, so that savings passes right along to you. Glass tanks are perfect if you want a larger tank, but still want to stick within your budget.
- Scratch Resistant. Glass tanks are generally more scratch resistant. This is extremely helpful when you’re setting up and maintaining your aquarium. There’s nothing worse than getting to the end of setting up your aquarium and accidentally putting a scratch right in the middle of your tank! The same can be said for cleaning the tank. It may only take one false move while cleaning your tank to put a scratch in your acrylic tank. Glass tanks are definitely the preferred tanks if you have children that you share your aquarium hobby with.
Disadvantages:
- Weight. Glass tanks can be very heavy, especially when it’s complete with water, decorations and fish. It can make it a little more difficult to carry the bigger sized tanks to a second level or down stairs.
- Breakage. Just like any other glass product, glass tanks can break. It’s not a very easy thing to accomplish, but it can happen.
- Variety. There aren’t many styles and shapes to choose from. Most glass tanks are just your basic rectangle, but still great for viewing the fish in your aquarium.
Conclusion
In conclusion, there are many options out there on glass tanks for your aquarium. You really can’t go wrong with the ones I’ve put together for you here. It all depends on the space you have for it, your budget and of course your experience level. I’m sure you’ll love your new tank, whichever size you choose!
